All about Telescopes
Produced by ESERO-UK, these short video clips look at a range of different telescopes and give advice and guidance on choosing a telescope for your school, as well as advice on how to make use of remote telescopes in school and also include an introduction to the Hubble Space Telescope. Presented by William Hill of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, the videos are:
• How to use a simple 70mm refractor telescope in school.
• Remote telescopes for schools.
• Basic reflector telescope.
• Advanced, motor-driven reflector telescope.
• Hubble Space Telescope.
The accompanying paper was written by Paul Roche with support from the Institute of Physics, and discusses some of the things to consider when purchasing a telescope for your school.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

(1) 70mm refractor video…
(1) 70mm refractor video clip: The clip starts with a concise and easy to understand explanation of how a refracting telescope works by comparing it to our eyes. It also describes the role of the eyepiece.
(2)Choosing a Telescope for a School: A useful document taking the reader through the questions you should ask before purchasing a telescope for a school.
(3) Robotic telescopes clip: A short clip introducing the idea of robotic telescopes for use by school students. This could be played as a starter to a first lesson on robotic telescopes.
(4) Reflecting telescope clip: Another short and informative clip describing how a reflecting telescope works. Along with the refracting telescope clip this would be useful when teaching the telescopes part of the GCSE Astronomy course.
(5) Motorised reflecting telescope clip: A clip describing a telescope with a motorised drive. The three telescope clips would also be useful when selecting a telescope for a school or advising students on what telescope to buy.
(6) Hubble Telescope clip: Another clip useful for teaching GCSE Astronomy. The clip describes the benefits of having a telescope above the atmosphere.
A good set of resources describing much of what you need to know when starting out in practical astronomy.
