Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
The Sanger Institute played a major role in the Human genome Project. It continues to perform ground-breaking research in the field of genetics.
The Human Genome Project was a massive, international effort to decode the human genome. That sequence is now joined by hundreds, soon to be thousands, of genomes in freely-available databases, so that researchers can mine the information within.
The resources in this collection contain a range of resources from Flash animations to paper and web based activities. They will support the teaching of topics such as DNA, genes and proteins, cancer and the Human Genome Project. The activities and animations are designed to complement the national curriculum and GCSE, AS and A-level Science specifications for 14-19 year olds. Resources may be used during lessons and science clubs or used for setting homework tasks.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
Human Genome Project and Gene Technology
From the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources will help students to understand the processes involved in the sequencing of DNA and the Human Genome Project. Animations illustrate: • The Human Genome Project (HGP) • DNA sequencing • Producing DNA libraries • Subcloning of DNA The information…
DNA
Produced by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources will help students to understand the structure of DNA, where it is found in cells and the function it performs. The activities include: • Animation which 'zooms in' on a body to ultimately reveal the structure of DNA • Activities making models…
Proteins
Produced by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these materials help students to understand the process of protein synthesis from transcription of DNA to translation into an amino acid sequence. Students are able to view an interactive animation of the process and also reinforce their understanding by interpreting data on DNA sequences…
Malaria
From the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources help students understand malaria, its transmission and the steps that are being taken to eradicate the disease. The resource includes: • An excellent interactive animation (Malaria Challenge) with details of malaria and the parasite's life cycle. • Video…
Pathogens
Produced by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources provide extensive infromation on a range of disease-causing organisms. Resources include student worksheets, presentations, animations and teacher guidance. Materials are suitable for a wide age range and will help students to understand: • bacterial pathogens •…
