The Teaching Resources Unit for Modern Physics (TRUMP) is a collaboration between school teachers and academic experts whose aim is to support the teaching of modern physics in post-16 courses.

The Astophysics package was published in 1997. It was written primarily to support modules currently available in the A level physics syllabuses at that time. Parts of package were also relevant to astronomical topics within International Baccalaureate and GCSE courses as well as to adult and continuing education.

The development work was supported by Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), the Nuffield Foundation, the Institute of Physics and the University of York.

Publications
1. Introduction to Astrophysics
2. Observational Properties of Astronomical Objects
3. Star Formation and Evolution
4. Planets and Orbits
5. Telescopes and Instruments
6. Galaxies, Cosmology and Relativity

Components of the publications
Each of the resources consisted of three main components:
• Study notes for teachers
• Teaching notes discussing the student activities and teaching approaches
• Student sheets providing a bank of resources for class use.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

TRUMP Part 1: Introduction to Astrophysics

This introductory part of the TRUMP Astrophysics package gave an overview of the current picture of the Universe. It provided some information relating to telescopes and observations, and ended with two examples of physics in astronomy: • the use of line spectra to estimate the age of the Universe and • the use of line…

TRUMP Part 2: Observational Properties of Astronomical Objects

Part 2 of the TRUMP Astrophysics resource package dealt with the observational properties of astronomical objects and was therefore concerned with the analysis and interpretation of observations. Like Part 1 of the TRUMP package, this part contained study notes (self-study material for teachers), teaching notes and photocopiable…

TRUMP Part 3: Star Formation and Evolution

This part of the TRUMP Astrophysics resource package dealt with the formation, evolution and 'death' of stars. Like all other parts of the TRUMP package, this part contains study notes (self-study material for teachers), teaching notes and photocopiable student sheets. This part formed a sequel to Part 2 of the package,…
