CREST Awards
CREST is a project-based awards scheme for the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) run by the British Science Association. It links the personal passions of students to curriculum-based learning.
UCAS endorse CREST Awards for inclusion in students’ personal statements – they’re well regarded, high-quality and a tangible recognition of success. CREST is a gold standard in STEM enrichment.
CREST can link into work experience placements, after-schools clubs or numerous linked schemes. Students can investigate or design and make, research a subject, or design a science communication project.
Assessment
CREST projects are assessed once students have completed their project work and have filled in their Profile Forms. During the assessment, students may be asked to present their work to the Local Coordinator/project mentor, either by producing a poster or giving a talk. Bronze awards can be assessed internally, by another teacher from your school, but for silver and gold CREST awards, the project must be assessed by an external person, usually the local coordinator, the project mentor or another person from the same organisation.
Your local coordinator will either agree to issue the award, or may recommend that the students do further work.
Your Local Coordinator and the British Science Association Head Office representatives will also be able to provide information on funding and sponsorship (if available), and information on CREST Regional and National events.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
