Effects of Climate Change - Images
A number of images from Practical Action showing the effects of climate change and climate change adaptation. The images can be freely used by students and/or incorporated into teaching resources by teachers. The following text describes each of the photographs:
• Drought in Kenya means there is little water left for herds to drink and many have died as a result. Maasi shepherds like this one now have to drive their herds up to 45km to get water.
• In Nepal the risk of flooding is getting greater with climate change. The villagers are filling metal cages called gabions with stones. They put them along the river band to protect against flooding.
• In Zimbabwe Practical Action has helped communities install rainwater harvesting tanks to collect and store water which is becoming scarcer due to climate change.
• Drip irrigation systems make the most of water when it is scarce. It gets water right to the roots of the plants. These women are tending plants in Nepal watered by this system.
• Flooding caused by climate change has caused land close to rivers in Sri Lanka to become saline so traditional rice crops can no longer grow there. Practical Action has introduced a new strain of red rice which is more resilient and can grow in these conditions.
• This family in Bangladesh has had its home flooded. Floods are more frequent and unpredictable as a result of climate change.
• In Bangladesh pumpkins are grown in holes along river banks on land that cannot grow other crops. Climate change has caused rivers to flood making the soil on the banks infertile.
• Farmers in Peru grow a wide variety of different potatoes to increase the biodiversity of their crops and reduce the potential impact of climate change.
• Climate change increases the risk of flooding in Bangladesh. Practical Action shows communities how to grow crops on a raft made of hyacinth roots. This means when their land floods the crops will not be ruined.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
