Science for Children with Learning Difficulties
The Learning Through Science guide on Science for Children with Learning Difficulties was written for teachers of children in the age range 8 to 13 who are unable to manage learning tasks which are successfully completed by most of their peers. This followed the recommendation in the Warnock Committee report of 1978 that particular attention should be given to curriculum development for such children, and the findings of research that appropriate teaching materials and guidelines for teachers were needed to improve their learning in science.
This guide comprises ten units of work covering areas of science which are considered important for all children to learn about. Each has its own introduction and list of activities. Most units present a variety of short practical investigations followed by some discussion points which help to bring out scientific ideas and enable children to find patterns and relationships. Whilst the text has been written mainly for teachers in primary and middle schools, much of the material is suitable for those who teach in special schools. The introduction provides a useful introduction to the needs of children with learning difficulties and shows how the units help to meet these needs.

Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
