From the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, this resource introduces the Human Genome Project (HGP). A short animation gives:

• an introduction to DNA and genomes;
• an overview of which countries were involved in the international Human Genome Project;
• a description of the processes, biological principles and techniques involved in sequencing the human genome.

The animation can be used when discussing the Human Genome Project and the outcomes of this international collaboration. It can be also used to illustrate how scientific techniques can be derived from natural biological processes. It illustrates how the principles of the Sanger sequencing method are derived from the natural process of DNA replication.

The animation also demonstrates how recombinant DNA techniques were used in the Human Genome Project to clone DNA sections for sequencing.

To play the animation, first download the file and save it to your computer, where it will run as a Flash animation.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
