Produced by the Wellcome Trust, this issue of the Big Picture looks at the physiology and sociology of exercise and movement.

For humans, movement is for more than just basic survival. They move for fun, to compete and to be healthy. This resource looks at the biological systems that keep humans moving and consider some of the psychological, social and ethical aspects of exercise and sport.

The resource includes:
• Articles and information on movement and exercise
• Video clips on exercise physiology and biomechanics
• Images of bones, skeleton, muscle, tendons, lungs and heart
• Animation of the sliding filament model of muscle contraction

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
