Ginn Science National Assessment Sheets in science for levels three to five of the National Curriculum, and levels C to E of the Scottish 5-14 guidelines, were published in 1997. They comprise photocopiable sheets which aim to help teachers to monitor and assess their students’ knowledge and abilities in science and to provide an opportunity for students to practise standard task type assessments.

The assessment pack provides sheets for each of the four key areas of science - Experimental and investigative science, Life processes and living things, Materials and their properties, and Physical processes. Each sheet assesses one or two key learning outcomes within each area. These outcomes are identified at the top of each sheet and are linked closely to the National Curriculum for science in England and Wales and the science component of environmental studies 5-14 (Scotland). They are also closely linked to the learning targets of Ginn Science. There are other packs of National Assessment Sheets, for levels two to four and one to three. Teachers are expected to use their knowledge of their students to decide which pack is suitable for them.

The introduction explains ways of using the sheets. Within each of the four key areas there are sheets for levels three, four and five. Thus the tasks are set at these levels and for each section there are notes for teachers about how to assess whether the students’ answers meet the achievement of the level. It suggests that working on the sheets is not time limited. A sheet for keeping records is provided at the end.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
