Global Solar Partners

This topic, from the Association for Science Education, allows classes in schools across the world to explore and exchange information about the applications of photovoltaic devices. The version of the topic that can be downloaded here is a trial version and is provided only in English.

• Global Solar Partners is a unit developed with the help of BP Amoco. It encourages pupils to learn about and exchange ideas about solar energy use.

• Plug in the Sun links with Global Social Partners and provides a series of practical activities mainly using cheap photovoltaic cells. This resource was edited by Dr. Paul Rowley, of CREST (Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology) at the University of Loughborough

As they work through the activities, students have the opportunity to explore the cultural significance of the Sun, compare the energy available from the Sun in different parts of the world, find out about the practical uses of PV cells and the costs of the various technologies.

There is an associated file of hands-on practical activities. This resource can also be used for research and design work in the electronics and resistant materials strands.

After exchanging their findings and views with students in other countries, students compare and discuss the responses received from classes in other parts of the world.

This global topic fits into the physics curriculum and in most countries it is suitable for students aged 12-16. The topic appeared in the ASE Science Year CD called Only Connect?.
