Learning How to Teach It was the twelfth in a series of 12 booklets published by Heinemann and the Association for Science Education to explore the issues arising from moving towards a broad and balanced science education for all young people. The main purpose of this booklet was to help teachers in the following ways:

• it offered advice on the preparation of a departmental science curriculum policy including recommendations for personal and professional development through in-service education
• it raised questions to help identify in-service needs
• it set out the content and relevance to professional development of the other SSCR guides in the Better Science series
• it outlined some of the changes in government policy in the 1980s related to in-service education and training (INSET)
• it identified current (1986-87) and possible future (post-1987) sources of funding which teachers might want to use
• it offered advice to those teachers who represented their school or authority on local committees brought together to support initial teacher training programmes
• it discussed the relationship between PGCE and BEd tutors, students, and the teachers in the practice schools.
