Established in 1994 as the Teacher Training Agency, this organisation became the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) in 2005 – a body responsible for the initial and in-service training of teachers and other school staff in England. In 2012 many of its functions were taken on by the establishment of the Teaching Agency, an agency of the Department for Education, responsible for administering the training of new and existing teachers, as well as the regulation of the teaching profession.
