Food in Space
This clip, from NASA, shows what types of food astronauts eat in space and how the food must be lightweight, nutritional, take up little volume and be long-lasting. A classroom activity is also included that investigates suitable foods and containers. This may be used at Key Stage Three or adapted for use at Key Stage Two.

This resources is based around a video clip whch will stimulate pupil's engagement with your lesson. It shows astronauts on board the ISS and details their food requirements in terms of nutrition and of course considering safety on board. For example did you know that bread is not prefered on board as cumbs can be deadly if they block up an air duct!
The resource also comes with several activities that can be carried out as part of Science or Food Technology Lessons; Healthy Eating, Suitable packaging, Safety testing for Space.
We have used this resource as part of a STEM Space week at school where students take part in Space related lessons in Technology, Science and Maths lessons. In Food Technology the students are shown the video clip followed by being given the opportunity to taste "Space Food" (can be purchased online). They they try to create their own space food by drying out various types of food and they sample each others products!
