NASA's Space Shuttle may be a well-known launch vehicle, but the majority of launches still take place using rockets. These regularly carry satellites into orbit. These materials show images of rockets, such as the Saturn V which powered the Apollo missions and current Delta and Atlas rockets. There is also a video showing the launch of a Delta rocket.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

Commentary: This is a good clip for showing what happens during a rocket/satellite launch and for helping to give students an idea of quickly the rocket rises through the atmosphere. It also helps to show how much fuel is used to achieve this rapid propulsion. There are a number of high quality images to show different stages of launching a  rocket.

This would be a good resource for looking at forces and propulsion with KS3 classes or looking at how satellites are launched. It would be good for stimulating debate about why the rocket can release the two jets on the side when it has travelled outside of the earths atmosphere.
