Build a Rocket Car
In this activity, from BLOODHOUND SSC, students build a model rocket car and explore the effect of drag on its performance. Maths, science and technology departments could all be involved.
The design and build could be followed by timing and analysis experiments. Model rocket motors are the ideal way to propel model cars across the playground. Rocket motors are sold with different impulses (thrust times time) enabling exploration of performance with different mass cars and different rocket engines.
BLOODHOUND engineers are working on ways of reducing drag and designing a shape which will ensure that BLOODHOUND SSC stays on the ground and is able to reach 1000 mph.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
