Design and Technology for Ages 5 to 16: Proposals of the Secretary of State 1989
A report from the National Curriculum Council (NCC). The final proposals published in June 1989 added considerable detail to the new approach, and made some minor alterations to the Attainment Targets.
There are four main sections in this document:
1. Design and technology in the National Curriculum
2. Profile components, attainment targets and programmes of study for design and technology
3. Information technology
4. Assessment of design and technology and information technology
and a number of appendices.
The order was split into two profile components:
1. Design and technology
2. Information technology
PC1 now contained four Attainment Targets:
AT1: Identifying needs and opportunities
AT2: Generating a design proposal
AT3: Planning and making
AT4: Appraising
PC2 contained just one AT, called ‘IT’.
For each of the Attainment Targets there were 10 levels of statements of achievement.
In addition there were 10 detailed Programmes of Study - one for each level, which covered Energy, Business and Economics, Tools and Equipment, Aesthetics, Systems, Structures, Mechanisms, Exploring and investigating, Imaging and generating, Modelling and communicating, Organising and planning, Making, Appraising, Health and safety and Social and environmental. Non-statutory exemplification was provided in italics.
Five aspects of IT capability were identified: Developing ideas and communicating, Information handling, Modelling, Measurements and control, Applications and Effects. These were matched to 10 statement levels.
