Café Scientifique - The Sunny Side of DNA
England (Yorkshire & the Humber)
01.06.2011
7.30pm - 9.00pm
The next Café Scientifique event will look at DNA, and in particular, hair.
Guest Speaker Professor Jonathan Rees trained in Dermatology at Newcastle and Vienna, and in Molecular Biology at Newcastle and Strasbourg. Over the last two decades his main research contribution has been the elucidation of the genetics of sun sensitivity, in particular identification of the gene underpinning red hair, freckling and sun sensitivity. More recently he has become interested in using informatic techniques to improve clinical diagnosis in his speciality, Dermatology.
This talk will explore why humans lose body hair, and how our biology has tried to catch up with environmental and social change to stop us getting too pink in the sun.
Café Scientifique is an informal evening of lively discussion revolving around contemporary scientific issues of the day. Each meeting begins with a short talk from an invited science-related speaker, followed by up to an hour of open discussion including a Q & A session. Everyone is welcome to attend and express their views, or to just enjoy a drink and listen. No scientific knowledge is assumed and everyone can participate.
Venue: The Basement, City Screen Picturehouse, York.
Free to attend, but by ticket only.
