Engineering Week: Designing the hip joint

This workshop will show an application of engineering and mathematical principles in biomechanics.

To begin with students will be tasked with calculating the hip joint force during a simple activity such as walking, and hence gain an appreciation of the forces and stress that joint replacements need to be designed to withstand.

They will then move on to the construction of a model of a hip joint using plastic bones and string, as well as the knee joint to create a fully free standing model.

The workshop will also look at how the skeleton is optimised to withstand the forces that it is subjected to everyday and showcase some of the latest research that is being carried out looking at osteoarthritis and joint replacement.

Suitable for 14-17 year-olds only.

Tickets are £20 standard / £10 Faraday Member.
