Mathematics Induction Day
Nationwide
22.05.2012
10am - 4pm
Venue: National STEM Centre, York
This event is an opportunity to explore the Nuffield projects and resource materials in more detail in order for you and your colleagues to discuss with other trainers how resources have been/could be used to support teachers in practice.
The work of the Nuffield Foundation aims to engage all secondary students in developing the necessary mathematical and statistical skills for their education and work needs, with a particular emphasis on key processes such as representing problems mathematically, analysing, interpreting, evaluating, communicating and reflecting.
Activities are designed to encourage group work, problem solving, dialogue, self/peer and formative assessment, building on ideas of Paul Black and others. Another significant and overlapping theme is the contextual setting of activities, to enable students to connect the concrete and the abstract. There is the opportunity to use these resources and approaches (from Nuffield and others) not just in mathematics classrooms but across other subjects that use mathematics.
Agenda
10:00 - 10:30 - Introduction and Overview
• Nuffield’s curricular work in mathematics
• Current themes - mathematical processes and contextual learning - for Key Stage 3, GCSEs and post-16, including Free Standing Mathematics Qualifications
• Nuffield-funded research and development – resources, evidence-based findings to inform classroom practice, policy matters
• Working with others - on group work, mathematical processes, mathematics and statistics for sciences and other subjects, and CPD for these.
10:30 - 11:30 - Applying Mathematical Processes (AMP) - working on sample Investigations and Practical Explorations
11:30 - 11:45 - Break
11:45 - 12:45 - Discussion on the underlying pedagogy, support materials for Nuffield AMP resources, and related (teaching and CPD) resources such as Bowland Maths Assessment Tasks, NRICH, PRIMAS, etc.
There will be opportunities to explore National STEM Centre resources and how the Centre can support teachers and trainers.
12:45 - 13:45 - Lunch
13:45 - 14:45 - Free Standing Mathematics Activities (FSMA) - working on sample activities, across Levels 1, 2 and 3, and for a range of topics (participants can choose from algebra and graphs, managing money, shape and space, statistical methods, calculus, mechanics, ...)
14:45 - 15:15 - Free Standing Mathematics Activities and Mathematics for Other Subjects - new developments (GCSE and GCE) and overview of underlying pedagogy and approaches
15:15 - 15:30 - Tea
15:30 - 16:00 - Further resources and support - from Nuffield and others, print and online.
Ideas/planning on weaving these into programmes of study, schemes of work, and school/college based CPD, with reference to research reviews and education policy work.
Audience: Consultant / Adviser, Head of Mathematics / Mathematics Coordinators, Lecturer, Mentor, Newly Qualified Teacher, Teacher
