Maths Magic Project Dissemination

Nationwide, England (Yorkshire & the Humber)

20.06.2012

10am – 1.30pm

An interactive dissemination event for those teaching and supporting maths in the tertiary sector.

The interactive agenda includes these amazing Maths Magic activities:

Are you a golden person? - Liz Meenan, University of Leeds
How do you measure up? The “golden ratio” is regarded as special and appears in nature in intriguing ways. This offers exciting opportunities to draw students into learning about ratios.

How to amaze people with a domino - Corinne Angier, Sheffield Hallam University
“Party tricks” are often met with “how did you do that?” Sometimes a mathematical description reveals the structure and uncovers the magic!

Circles activity – Tom Button, Further Mathematics Support Programme, MEI Mechanics and human motion - Tom Roper, University of Leeds
This short session will show how the basic principles of mechanics, far from being boring and apparently not related to the real world, can be brought into the classroom and used in a very practical way and applied to the motion of the human body. Expect to be a volunteer.

Maths Magic Project
Maths Magic is funded by HEFCE to help widen participation of adults into STEM subjects via capacity-building events for staff teaching maths to adult returners in the North and North East. It provides opportunities to develop and share activities which promote the enjoyment, beauty and intrinsic interest of maths. The ultimate aim is to help adults perceive that maths can be appealing and fun and enjoyable, even fun, rather than a functional necessity.

Who is the event for?
This event is aimed at any staff in FE or HE who wish to engage mature students:
? who have the potential ultimately to study a STEM subject in HE or
? who are already studying a STEM subject in HE but struggle with the maths.

A special welcome to: Access to HE diploma tutors for science, technology and engineering subjects; HE foundation level science, technology and engineering tutors; support staff who provide workshops or one-to-one support for students struggling with maths in HE or at access-level; teachers of GCSE to adult returners intending to study science, technology and engineering subjects; anyone looking for inspiration or with good ideas to share for making maths more appealing to adults who will need it for maths subjects in HE.

Event aims
The event aims to provide participants with opportunities to:
- Find out about the project now it is at the end of its funding
- Take part in enjoyable activities that they can use with their own learner
- Consider resources available to them through the project
- Find out how we will take the project forward and how they can be involved
