This residential course, aimed at Year 11 / Year 12 students and organised by the Smallpeice Trust, will take place at the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education at the University of Birmingham. Students will be taking part in a wide range of hands-on activities which explore a a range of subjects including aerodynamics, crashworthiness, radio communications, railway control and signalling systems. As well as this, students will get to explore the scientific principles behind these and see just how challenging and rewarding a job in railway systems engineering and integration can be.
During the course students will:
- Compete in small teams to design and make the front end of a train and seeing which train performs best in a wind tunnel and in a crash test
- Find out how trains protect passengers and drivers
- Develop communication, team-building and time-management skills to help boost their CVs
