2010 Maths Summer School a resounding success

Maths Experiment 3

The National STEM Centre’s inaugural Summer School for prospective teachers of A- level Mathematics took place from 23-27 August and was fully sponsored by the Clothworkers’ Foundation. During the week, 59 teachers attended: these were all teachers who would be teaching A-level Mathematics for the first time in September or who had a small amount of A-level teaching experience. The aims of the course were to increase subject knowledge and deepen understanding, explore a variety of teaching approaches to delivering key A-level concepts and to discover vital practical approaches to teaching applied mathematics. The Summer School was provided by the National STEM Centre working with colleagues from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI).

There was a very positive atmosphere throughout the week and all the informal feedback from the delegates was that they had found it incredibly useful and a few comments from the forms can be found below:

  • “I thought the organisation and management of every aspect of the course was excellent. I had a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable week.”
  • “Sessions have been well planned and delivered.”
  • “Overall inspiring and informative. I’m looking forward to September – I can’t wait to try out these new ideas in the classroom.”

All the teachers who attended will be teaching A-level from September and are now much better prepared for this as a consequence of the Summer School. They also now have an online community in which they can support each other once they start applying the methods in the classroom.

The National STEM Centre would like to thank the Clothworkers’ Foundation on behalf of all of the teachers who attended.
