A new vision for the NCETM

March 2012 saw the start of a new contract for the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Building on the work of the past six years, the new contract has resulted in a new vision and a new plan of activities for the next three years.

Still with teachers and the teaching of mathematics at its heart, the new vision for the NCETM details its aims to:

  • raise the professional status of all those engaged in the teaching of mathematics
  • raise standards by supporting mathematics-specific CPD so that the mathematical potential of learners can be fully realised
  • support teaching schools and other improvement agents in their work with schools.

The support and guidance provided by the NCETM will be underpinned by the three elements of effective teaching identified by Ofsted and ACME:

  • strong subject knowledge
  • understanding of the ways in which pupils learn mathematics
  • skills and confidence in using subject knowledge and understanding in the classroom.

The new vision underpins the programme of work being delivered by the consortium managed by Tribal Education in partnership with Myscience, Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI), and the Institute of Education, University of London (IOE)
