A twilight session for D&T teachers

Tuesday 29 May 2012
National STEM Centre, University of York
4.30pm – 6.00pm
Refreshments available from 4.00pm

With Professor John Cave, Design and Technology Education, Middlesex University.

This presentation looks at real examples of smart materials, new technologies and inexpensive ways of taking design and technology to a new level. It will consist of demonstrations that include the introduction and application of smart materials such as:
o smart cord
o heat reactive pigments
o light reactive (wavelength shifting) materials
o unusual conductors - including fabric and polymers
o phase change materials

The use of low cost components and modules for:
o generating and storing electrical energy
o controlling motors
o embedding control in products
o keeping atomic time

Given the fantastic resources now available to D&T specialists, this is an ideal opportunity for sharing and generating ideas to bring designing and making closer to accelerating developments in science, engineering and manufacturing.
