ACME Report: The Mathematical Needs of Learners

On 14 June ACME, the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education, launched its ‘Mathematical Needs’ report. This report has taken two years to complete and investigates what the mathematical needs of both Higher Education and employers are, as well as the learning needs of students. It questions whether these can be reconciled and how the research can inform future policy.

The report consists of two parts; one concerning employers and Higher Education and, the other, the learning needs of students. It contains recommendations for policy makers, CPD providers, universities, schools and post -16 institutions. The overarching findings of the research are that there needs to be coherence across all aspects of mathematical education, from curriculum to assessment, qualifications and resources, and collaboration between the government and its agencies and associated non-governmental organisations, industries, universities, schools and colleges.
