Big Bang Yorkshire and Humber is on the hunt for STEM students

The Big Bang Yorkshire and Humber is calling for 11 - 19 year-olds to showcase their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) projects at its Regional Fair, taking place at York Minster on 14 July.

The Big Bang Yorkshire & Humber is one of twelve events held annually across the UK which seek to enthuse young people about and celebrate their achievements in science, technology, engineering and maths, ultimately inspiring them to follow careers in these rewarding fields. Collectively, thousands of young people from schools and colleges, as well as home educated pupils, across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are set to take part. More than 1,000 participants from Yorkshire and Humber alone are to descend on York Minster in July.

Young people who submit their projects will have the opportunity to show off their designs to hundreds of young people, parents and teachers attending the Fair. A panel of judges will select the best and regional winners will be nominated to go through to a national heat to become UK Young Scientist or Young Engineer for Britain, winning prizes of up to £2000.

Around 40 schools and clubs from across the region have already signed up to showcase the hard work of their students and NYBEP, lead organisers of the Regional Fair, are urging more to step up to the mark: “This is a chance for our young people in the region to shine,” explained NYBEP Advisor, Yvonne Emerson. “The Big Bang Yorkshire and Humber hosts the regional finals of some of the UK’s largest national award schemes in STEM including the prestigious National Science & Engineering Competition, CREST and Young Engineer for Britain. Success here is a huge step towards budding scientists making their mark at a national level and boosting their confidence and future career prospects.”

In addition to student displays, a host of hands-on workshops and activities led by leading researchers, STEM experts and businesses will complete a memorable day for participants.

Schools and clubs who would like to enter their projects please contact NYBEP by emailing bigbang@nybep.org.uk.
