Dr Allan Clements appointed as UK-ESERO Manager

Dr Allan Clements

The National STEM Centre is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Allan Clements as UK-ESERO Manager.

UK-ESERO (the European Space Education Resource Office), an education project of the European Space Agency (ESA), has been established at the National STEM Centre as a result of grants from ESA and the Department for Education. The programme will promote space exploration and the use of space as a context for teaching and learning in STEM subjects.

Dr Clements brings his extensive industrial experience of the STEM sector to this new role, together with strong contacts across the science education sector. As Manager of the UK-ESERO office at the National STEM Centre Allan is looking forward to using the exciting context of space to enrich the teaching of STEM subjects across all school years, and support teachers in engaging young people with STEM subjects:

"I am delighted to take on this role. After 30 years working in the chemical industry I know how important STEM subjects are to the prosperity of our economy and our country's future success. Space as an industry will continue to grow and be a major contributor to the UK economy, while also providing an exciting and inspirational context which can be used to enrich the teaching of STEM subjects. UK-ESERO is fully aligned with the objectives of the National STEM Centre and has strong support from the newly formed UK Space Agency. I look forward to helping and encouraging more teachers to use the excellent free teaching resources produced by the European Space Agency and other organisations associated with the space industry."

UK-ESERO is building a comprehensive website offering news stories, inspiring resources and details of forthcoming space events. Dr Clements has established a network of Space Ambassadors throughout the UK, who will act as contact points for schools and colleges for information, training, visits and guidance. Furthermore, a large number of space education resources, for example, collections provided by the European Space Agency, will be available from the National STEM Centre's online searchable eLibrary to assist teachers in curriculum development and lesson planning.

UK-ESERO will formally launch later this year. Further information and access to the resources will become available on the UK-ESERO website.
