FE STEM Data project - July 2011 report

The Royal Academy of Engineering has published the second in its series of reports from the FE STEM Data Project.

Funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the project investigates the contribution made by the FE and Skills sector in England to the education and training of young people and adults. Throughout the report key messages from the complex data are very clearly represented.

Headline findings demonstrate the need for development of meaningful STEM progression routes for young people, with opportunities to achieve qualifications at Level 3 and above:

  • Achievement at Level 3 is required for many progression routes in STEM
  • The FE and Skills sector accounts for 60% of funded STEM qualifications completed by 16-18 year olds in 2009/10, with 40% delivered by Schools
  • At Level 3, Schools account for 62% of qualifications, with the bulk of FE and Skills provision is at Level 2 or below
