National Curriculum Review update December 2011

The Department of Education has published a suite of documents setting out the evidence gathered to date by the National Curriculum review. This comprises of the following:

  • the report of the review’s Expert Panel - setting out their recommendations in relation to the framework for the new National Curriculum and recommending that these are debated further before decisions are made
  • a summary of the evidence gathered about curricula for English, mathematics and science in high-performing jurisdictions
  • a research report looking at subject breadth in the curricula used in other education jurisdictions
  • a summary report of the responses to the review’s call for evidence

These documents can be downloaded below and from the Department for Education website.

In his Ministerial Statement on the National Curriculum Review Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, noted that “the review team’s work uncovered a consistent theme: these high-performing jurisdictions set materially higher expectations in terms of what they believe children can and should master at different ages. If our schools, and young people, are to become internationally competitive again we must learn from the best in the world.”
