Russell Group universities recommend science and mathematics A-levels

The Russell Group of top twenty universities in the UK has published a guidance booklet advising young people on the A-level subjects that its universities prefer.

The Informed Choices booklet lists a number of "facilitating subjects", including mathematics and the sciences, which it recommends to ensure “a much wider range of options open to you at university.”:

  • Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English
  • Geography
  • History
  • Languages (classical and modern)

Jenifer Burden, Director of the National STEM Centre, welcomed the guide: “Subject and qualification choices for post-16 study are crucial decisions in determining a young person’s options for higher education. This guide highlights the importance of mathematics and sciences in providing young people with the broadest of choices. The guide will be of particular value to those young people who do not have good access to informed careers advice and guidance.”

The Informed Choices guide was published by the Russell Group in collaboration with the Institute of Careers Guidance. You may download the booklet from the link on the left hand side of this page.
