Standards Unit Improving learning in mathematics box

The National STEM Centre has a supply of the Standards Unit Improving learning in mathematics boxes freely available for teachers.

Improving Learning in Mathematics is part of the Teaching and Learning Programme that was designed to transform teaching, training and learning in selected subjects by developing and supporting Subject Learning Coaches. The programme was started by the DfES [now DCSF] Standards Unit.

This multi-media resource (often known as the "Standards Unit box") was developed with teachers, trainers and managers. Improving Learning in Mathematics builds on existing successful practice and explores approaches that encourage a more active way of learning through the use of group work, discussion and open questioning. Learners are encouraged to 'have a go', become more independent and reflective about their mathematics, to learn to think mathematically rather than simply learning rules and most importantly, to enjoy their mathematics.
