STEM Manager tool launched

The National STEM Centre is working closely with several partners to provide online guidance materials and planning tools for schools that are developing their whole-school STEM ethos and activities - the 'STEM Schools' project.

A crucial element of this project is the online ‘STEM Manager’ tool, which captures learning from:

  • The three-year Department for Education (DfE) funded ‘Timeline’ project, which worked with 27 schools to explore the potential for embedding STEM careers awareness in early stages of secondary education.
  • Case studies from 25 schools that received small grants to set up reflective STEM Knowledge Networks both within and across local schools and colleges.
  • Trainers with extensive experience of working with schools to raise engagement and achievement in STEM subjects.

The ‘STEM Manager’ is now freely available via the National STEM Centre website, and may be accessed here.

Coming soon:

  • Funding from the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) is supporting the development of a STEM Manager for the FE sector.
  • To accompany the STEM Manager, there will be an online ‘STEM Planner’ that facilitates collaborative planning for STEM Enhancement & Enrichment activities across STEM subjects.

Both these online tools will be launched shortly – subscribe to our Newsfeed RSS and follow us on Twitter @NtlSTEM Centre to get immediate updates.

Are you, or schools you work with, a ‘STEM School’?

The ‘STEM Manager’ will continue to be updated in order to share the expertise and experience of schools that are raising students’ awareness, aspirations, and achievement in STEM subjects through a whole-school STEM ethos.

The National STEM Centre is keen to hear from teachers, schools, and Local Authorities who are interested in contributing case studies to the STEM Manager, or learning more about how it could be used to support your work.

**September dissemination event** Hosted by the National STEM Centre in York, a dissemination event for colleagues with an interest in using the STEM Manager and Planner tools. This is an opportunity to learn more about how the tools have been used during their pilot phase.

The ‘Timeline’ project was carried out by the Centre for Education and Industry at the University of Warwick (CEI), the International Centre for Guidance Studies at the University of Derby (iCeGS) and Isinglass Consultancy Ltd. More details of the project are available in the final report, ‘Good Timing’ (2011).

STEM Knowledge Networks were supported through funding from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and the National STEM Centre. More details of the networks can be found here.
