Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme

SEP was set up in 1998, by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, to develop innovative, low-cost resources to enhance secondary science education, and provide support for science teachers. It has produced an extensive set of publications which are now available on the National STEM Centre eLibrary.
SEP publications
SEP’s range of high-quality publications includes booklets, CD-ROMs, DVDs and animations. They offer teachers guidance on introducing new approaches in the classroom, along with student activity sheets and interactive resources. These publications are available as a set of collections in the National STEM Centre eLibrary, grouped into the following themes:
- How science works
- Matter and change
- Materials by design
- Energy and power
- Electricity, magnetism and forces
- Waves and radiation
- Professional development
SEP’s focus has been on promoting inspiring and challenging practical work, and its ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ series of publications in particular aims to extend the range of stimulating practical activities for students aged 11-16.
Many publications are accompanied by editable student sheets so that teachers can adapt the approaches to their own context.
SEP has a long-standing relationship with Mindsets (formerly Middlesex University Teaching Resources) in the development of low-cost equipment and practical resources to support SEP publications.
Catalyst magazine
SEP publishes Catalyst magazine, which can be purchased as an annual subscription and is available freely online through the National STEM Centre eLibrary. This topical science magazine for students aged 14-19 years brings science to life with insights into cutting-edge research and practical applications.
Learning Skills for Science (LSS)

Professional development
From September 2011 to July 2012 more than 200 trainers have completed training
in the use of SEP Physics and Chemistry resource materials. These trainers will
incorporate these materials into their own portfolio of activity for teachers.
